About
I study the history of children and childhood in Canada in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In conjunction with gender, race, and class, my work employs size and age as important, but often neglected, categories of historical analysis. Most recently, I've written about the medical treatment of children in Canada between 1900 and 1950.
The perspectives of children encourage fresh interpretations of the past - often bringing into sharper relief how adult-driven agendas of reform and socialization limited or left behind particular children, especially those judged to be outside the boundaries of the status quo. This past reflects on present efforts on the part of policy makers, educators, social workers, parents, and other powerful adults to improve the life circumstances of all children.
